| Overview:
A candid and cooperative approach to media and public relations is essential to the positive growth and development of Texas Southern University. The Office of Media & Public Relations operates as a major-line organizational unit at TSU. Its primary purpose is to promote the University and increase the public's support and awareness of the University's mission, goals, and objectives. In addition, the office plays a vital role in promoting the achievements and activities of TSU's faculty, staff, students, and alumni. The goals of the Office of Media & Public Relations are met by providing press releases, publications, photography, and other special projects needed. The press releases are prepared on a daily basis and include major news stories about the University, students, faculty, staff, and the administration. The information is sent to various media including local, national and educational publications. The office staff publishes the TSU Quarterly and This TSU Week. The TSU Quarterly is designed to promote achievements, students, employees, alumni and other campus-wide events. This TSU Week is a smaller version of the Quarterly publication, which is published on a weekly basis. Requests for photographic assignments must be made through the office and approved by the director. Those who desire photographs for university related activities must complete a request form for promotional services and return it to the office at least 48 hours before a scheduled event. To ensure the provision of clear, concise communications, all media inquires should be made through the office, and the initial point of contact should always be the director, the spokesperson for the University. If for some reason the director is unavailable, another member of the staff can assist you. In the event of a crime, controversy, or in routine matters, the director will see to it that the media gets the facts quickly and accurately. Attempts to suppress bad news almost invariably lead to unhappy consequences. Rumors are, as a rule, far worse than reality. Established policy and procedures enhance the credibility of the college with both the media and the public. Texas Southern University
