Education

  • Daley claims that students are doing better in school. But, half the students who begin school in Chicago do not graduate.

  • In the 1996/1997 school year, the truancy rose to 58,130.

  • Daley’s retention policy leads to more students dropping out of school.

  • Daley disbanded the Chicago Multilingual Council, a legislatively mandated bilingual parent body.

  • Daley regards non-English skills as obstacles rather than strengths on which we can build.

  • Instead of working with local school councils to improve schools, Daley stripped the local councils of their authority.

  • Estimates indicate that the Chicago City Colleges graduation rate is less than half the national average for community colleges.

  • The City Colleges budget has risen to $246.6 million, while standard performance and enrollment have declined.
