BOBBY RUSH ANNOUNCES CANDIDACY Pledges New Era of Inclusiveness Chicago (Nov. 23, 1998) -- Bobby Rush today offered a new vision of leadership for Chicago that promotes a spirit of fairness and accountability for city government. Rush pledged to implement sweeping changes that will improve the quality of life for all Chicagoans and return city resources and attention to the neighborhoods in which the heart and soul of Chicago reside. "My administration will speak to the soul of Chicago its people," said Rush. " The soul of Chicago is not measured by the success of downtown or the wealth of investors. It is measured by our childrens hope for the future. The economic security of our families. And the safety of our community. "The Daley administration has not done enough to advance in these critical areas. We will do better in a Rush administration, " he said. In a statement to a packed ballroom of supporters at the Hyatt Regency at McCormick Place, Rush noted that because the Daley administration serves only a privileged few, the city has become unlivable and unaffordable for many. "As Mayor, I will manage an administration that values inclusion, empowerment and co-operation," he said. Rush said that he will create a school system where "teachers and administrators join hands with parents in a partnership to educate our children" and where children are considered "an asset to be cherished, nurtured and cultivated." Rush also outlined his plan to change the culture of the Chicago Police Department into one that is built on openness, fairness and respect. Rush was joined at his announcement by a diverse coalition of community activists, members of the faith community and elected officials including Congressmen Jesse Jackson Jr. and Congressman Danny Davis. ### |
